1. Open Reason
2. Go to FILE: OPEN
3. Open up your beat that you made into a full song.
4. Make sure your beat has the MClass Mastering Suite Combi ABOVE THE MIXER. If you DON'T have it, click the item that is right ABOVE the mixer and create the Mclass Mastering Suit Combi. Press all of the buttons on the MMSC to turn them red.
5. Make sure your beat has all of your parts. Set your "L" at the BEGINNING OF THE BEAT and "R" at the END OF THE BEAT.
6. Go to FILE: EXPORT LOOP AS AUDIO FILE.
7. Save your beats in your folder. Make sure your beats are WAVE files, click SAVE.
8. When you get to "Export Audio Settings", your "Sample Rate" should be 44100 and your "Bit Depth" should be 16.
Save your work! You can now take these beats and put them into iTunes. Although the school doesn't allow these web sites, when you go home you can also put the beats up on websites like IMEEM.

Making a Full Song Part 3
If you haven't done Part 1 or 2 of this assignment, make sure that you go back and complete them before going any further!
The format for turning a beat/loop into a full song typically goes like this:
INTRO 1-9
CHORUS 9-17
VERSE 17-33
CHORUS 33-41
VERSE 41-57
CHORUS 57-65
VERSE 65-81
CHORUS 81-89
OUTRO 89-97
An intro is the beginning of the a song. The chorus is usually a part of the song where the lyrics may repeat AND all of the instruments in the beat play. The verse is where the rapper or singer would get their time to showcase their abilities/talk about a subject. The outro is, you guessed it, the ending of the song. Many songs fade out during the outro. Today lets just begin by making our Intro, our First Chorus, and our First Verse.
1. Open Reason
2. Open your beat titled (YOUR NAME) FULL SONG.
3. Your beat should have 4 items on the track: Redrum, Dr. REX, and 2 Melodies. All of your patterns on the track should have been copied until the reach the #33.
4. Lets start with making our INTRO. Our INTRO will happen between #1-9. It's the beginning of the song. For your intro, try something like deleting all of your Redrum from #1-9 and maybe the first half of the Dr. REX. A step like this will give the beat more build up & can make a listener more excited about the song.
5. Next is our CHORUS. For our FIRST CHORUS which happens at #9-17, ALL OF THE INSTRUMENTS WILL PLAY. Let's not delete anything here and move to the next step.
6. Now we're at our FIRST VERSE. For our FIRST VERSE which happens at #17-33, we want to give our rapper or singer room to show their skills. For our FIRST VERSE, Let's delete just ONE of the melodies from the entire verse. Now lets delete 1/2 of the Dr. REX boxes from the FIRST VERSE.
Good work! We're now 1 step closer to having our full beat complete!

Making a Full Song Part 1
The semester is almost over and it's time to learn how to make our beats into full length songs! Today we will begin the first process of making a full beat: Making the Loop. We have been making the loop the entire time in class.
You can use a Keyboard OR The Matrix to make Today's beat. Lets get started!
1. Open Reason
2. Create an MClass Mastering Suite Combi
3. Create a Mixer 14:2
4. Set your tempo between 70-110.
5. Create a Redrum and make a 32 step drum beat using a Clap OR Snare, Bass drum, Hi Hat, and a Percussion. Make sure all of your sounds are on the correct boxes. Move R to 5 Copy your pattern to track.
6. Create a Dr. REX Loop Player. Load a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop & put it "To Track".
7. Now you can create ANY SAMPLER (nn19/nnxt) OR SYNTHESIZER (subtractor/malstrom/combinator). Load in ANY Sound you like. If you want to use a keyboard to make your melody, make sure your keyboard is plugged in. If you want to use the matrix, make sure you create a matrix AFTER you pick your sound.
8. Record your melody using the keyboard OR Copy it to track using the matrix. Make sure you QUANTIZE your melody if you use a keyboard. Make sure you Put your matrix box on the correct track if you use the matrix.
9. Repeat steps 7 & 8 to make another melody with a new sound.
10. When you are finished you should have on the track the following: 32 step redrum beat, dr. rex percussion loop, 2 melodies using either the keyboard or the matrix.
11. Save your beat as (YOUR NAME) FULL SONG.

Crank Dat Minor Scale
Crank Dat Minor Scale

Yesterday we played the C minor scale, both up the scale and down the scale, using the Matrix.
Today we are going to recreate the Crank Dat Soulja Boy melody which is in C minor.
After we make the melody you will create your own melody using C minor.
Remember, we don't have the exact same sounds that Souja Boy used (He made the beat using another program, FL Studio), we have a similar sound, but our melody will be the same.
- Open Reason
- Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
- Set Tempo to 70 bpm
- Create a NN-XT Digital Sampler
- Click on the Folder in the upper left hand corner of the NN-XT.
- In the Patch Browser, click Orkester Sound Bank: Mallets: Glockenspiel.smp
- Now that we have our sound loaded we need to create a Matrix to play it.
- Go to the Create Menu and select the Matrix, all the way at the bottom of the menu.
- We want to use the Matrix to play a the melody from Crank That Soulja Boy.
- First, turn the volume down on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, and 16th steps.
- Now on step 1, move the note up 12 spots.
- On step 4, move the note up 7 spots.
- On step 7, move the note up 8 spots.
- On step 11, move the note up 12 spots.
- On step 14, move the note up 7 spots.
- When you are done it should look like this.
- How many notes have the volume on?
- How many different notes are there?
- Now, create a Redrum and make a 16 step drum pattern using a Clap, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and Percussion. Make sure you put the sounds on appropriate boxes!
- Or instead of a Clap, try putting a Snap on 5 and 13 just like Soulja Boy.
- When you finish your Drum Beat, Copy Pattern To Track.
- Now we want to revisit the NN-XT and the Matrix.
- On the Matrix, change the pattern to PATTERN 2.
- Turn the volume down on all the steps.
- Create a melody with the notes from C minor, with the volume up on 5 of the steps in the Matrix, using between 3 and 5 different notes.

The Matrix and the C Minor Scale
Tuesday we made a melody (the part of a song you sing along to) with the C Major Scale and on Monday we played the C Major scale on the Matrix.
Today we are going to create the C minor scale using the Matrix.
The difference between the C Major Scale and the C minor Scale is that the 3rd, 6th, and 7th notes of the C minor scale are one step below those notes in the C Major Scale.

The Matrix: Reason

Today we are going to start a new method for creating melodies in Reason using the Matrix. Some of you may find this to be a much easier alternative to using the keyboard. First lets go over some music theory. In music, musicians use scales as the frame for their melodies. There are two basic types of scales, the Major Scale, which has a happy sound, and the minor scale, which has a somber sound. You hear the Major Scale a lot in Pop Music. And you hear the minor scale a lot in Hip Hop music. Today we're going to learn the Major Scale. And more specifically the C Major Scale.
The Major Scale is made up of seven distinct notes, plus an eighth which duplicates the first an octave higher. These notes correspond to the syllables "Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, (Do)". The simplest major scale to write or play on the piano is C major, the only major scale not to require sharps or flats, using only the white keys on the piano keyboard:
- Open Reason
- Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
- Create a NN19 Digital Sampler
- Click on the Folder in the upper left hand corner of the NN19.
- In the Patch Browser, click Reason Factory Sound Bank: NN19 Sampler Patches: Piano: BRIGHTPIANO.smp
- Now that we have our sound loaded we need a way to play it...ENTER THE MATRIX
- Go to the Create Menu and select the Matrix, all the way at the bottom of the menu.
- We want to use the Matrix to play a C Major Scale.
- Look at the Matrix, do you see the keyboard? We can use this to help us put the NOTES (the red rectangles) on all the white keys.
- Below the NOTES in the Matrix, do you see the lines? These move up and down and control the VOLUME.
- To make the C Major Scale we are going to move every other note up to the next white key. (I moved the NOTES in between all the way up to the top so that they wouldn't be in my way.)
- After I've moved all my NOTES, I want to turn the VOLUME all the way down on the NOTES I don't want to hear. After you finish this step, your MATRIX should look something like this.
- Listen to your scale, does it sound like Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do?
- Save in your folder as Matrix C Major Scale.
- Think about the following questions...
- What is a Scale?
- What does a Major Scale sound like? Who uses it?
- What is a Melody?
- Now, if there is time left in class, make a 32 step Redrum beat to go along with your melody. Remember, the beat should include a Clap or Snap or Snare, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, an Percussion. Don't forget to put the sounds on the correct boxes!

The Keyboard
The past 2 weeks we have been working with the keyboards using a Dr. Rex to change the melody of a Dr. Rex Loop. Some of you had an issue with hitting the keyboard and not hearing a sound. That was because of a certain thing on the keyboard called "Octave". Today we are going to make our own melodies using the Keyboard. Almost every "Octave" should play a sound when using a Combinator, NNXT, NN19, Subtractor, or Malstrom. Today, we will be making Redrum drum beats and using the Subtractor to add our own original melody. Lets get started! For a reference, here are pictures of the C Major scale & the C Minor scale.

The difference between the 2 scales are the 3rd, 6th and 7th notes.
I want you to make a 2 bar melody using between 3-5 notes with a Redrum drum beat.

Halloween: The Curse of Reason
Are you scared yet? Today we're going to be using a sample from the movie Halloween and making our own remixes to it. There is 2 ways this can be done....1) Copying the loop to track or 2) Using the keyboard to make your own melody out of the sample. I recommend using the keyboard with this loop. Okay, with that being said, grab your theoretical knife, grab your theoretical mask, put on your theoretical jumpsuit and KILL (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)...this beat!
1. ) Download your choice of either loop 1, loop 2, or both. To get loop 1 click here: http://www.transferbigfiles.com/Get.aspx?id=e14eb3fe-8a6c-483e-86de-703f9553663f
To get loop 2 click here: http://www.transferbigfiles.com/Get.aspx?id=afabccc6-a65c-4844-bb47-0105b5b58fad
2.) Open Reason
3.) Create Mixer 14:2
4.) Set your tempo between 80-120.
5.) Create a Redrum Drum Computer and make either a 16 step or 32 step beat.
6.) Create a Dr. Rex Loop Player.
7.) Click on the folder to find a sound. In the menu, select "Desktop" to find the Halloween samples. Choose either Halloween1 or Halloween2.
8.) Either copy the pattern to the track or use the keyboard to make your own melody out of the sample. For keyboard instructions continue reading.
9.) Play your Redrum beat and practice your rhythm using the sample on the keyboard. When you are ready, Put your L at 1 and your R at 3.
10.) Press the record button and play in your melody with your keyboard. When you are finished, press the record button again to stop recording.
11.) Press the QUANTIZE button to fix your keyboard melody if you think it is off beat.
12.) Save the beat as (Your Name) Halloween.

The Keyboard
Today we are going to introduce a new instrument: The Keyboard
- Open Reason
- Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
- Set Tempo to 95 bpm
- For this exercise, let's make a 32 step beat!
- Create Redrum
- In Sound 1 on the Redrum, load a Clap and put it on 5 and 13.
- In Sound 2 on the Redrum, load a Bass Drum and put it on 1, and a few other boxes (except 5 and 13).
- In Sound 3 on the Redrum, load a Hi Hat and put it on boxes that sound good.
- In Sound 4 on the Redrum, load a Percussion sound and put it anywhere.
- Now, we want to edit steps 17-32.
- Change the steps of the Redrum from 16 to 32.
- Move the Edit Steps from 1-16 to 17-32.
- Repeat steps 6 through 9.
- Now that you've finished making your pattern, it's time to Copy Pattern To Track.
- Right click on the Redrum and select Copy Pattern to Track.
- Click on the PATTERN button on the Redrum so that they don't play at the same time.
- Move your Right Loop point to R3
- Now we want to Create a Dr. Rex instrument loop.
- Go to the Create menu and Create a Dr. Rex Loop Player.
- We need to load a loop, so click on the folder in the upper left hand corner of the loop player.
- Choose one of your favorite loops.
- Now, we're going to play the loop using the keyboard. Hear how when you play the keyboard it plays different slices of your Dr. Rex?
- Push play and try making a new melody using the keyboard.
- When you find a melody that you like, push record, wait for the cursor to get back to the L and start playing!
- When you are done, push stop.
- Save your beat as Keyboard Rex.
