Dr. REX Quiz

  1. Open Reason
  2. Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
  3. Create a Dr. Rex & load either an Instrument Loop or a Music Loop and put it "To Track."
  4. Now set your tempo to the same tempo as your loop.
  5. Create a Redrum and make a 32 step drum pattern using a Clap, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and Percussion. Make sure you put the sounds on the right boxes!
  6. On the Redrum, Copy Pattern To Track.
  7. Create a Dr. Rex. Load a Percussion Loop and put it "To Track."
  8. Let me know you've finished your work and I'll check & grade it.
  9. Save your beat as (your name) dr rex quiz.
  10. When you are finished you may QUIETLY have free time.

Practice for Dr. REX Quiz

You guys have been doing great using the Dr. Rex Loop Player. I'm very impressed with the beats made so far. Friday, we're going to have a quiz so I can make sure everybody who knows their work can receive credit. If you have been paying attention, you should have no problem with the quiz. For now, lets get started practicing.
  1. Open Reason
  2. Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
  3. Create a Dr. Rex
  4. Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.
  5. Select either Dr. Rex Instrument Loops or Music Loops.
  6. Choose a loop and then click "TO TRACK"
  7. On the quiz, steps 3-6 will say Create a Dr. Rex Instrument loop and put it TO TRACK.
  8. Now set your tempo to the same tempo as your loop.
  9. Create a Redrum.
  10. Change the Steps to 32.
  11. In Sound 1, load a clap and put it on boxes 5 and 13.
  12. Now Move "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
  13. Put the clap on boxes 5 and 13
  14. Move "EDIT STEPS" back to 1-16
  15. In Sound 2, load a bass drum and put it on 1 and a few other boxes that go with your loop.
  16. Now move "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
  17. Put the bass drum on 1 and a few other boxes that go with the loop.
  18. Move "EDIT STEPS" back to 1-16
  19. In Sound 3, load a high hat and put it any boxes...make sure it goes with your loop.
  20. Now move "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
  21. Click on boxes that go with your loop.
  22. Move "EDIT STEPS" back to 1-16
  23. In Sound 4, load either a percussion-hi or percussion-other and put it any boxes...make sure it goes with your loop.
  24. Now move "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
  25. Click on boxes that go with your loop.
  26. Once you're happy with how your drums sound right click on the Redrum and select Copy Pattern To Track.
  27. Don't forget to click on the Pattern Button.
  28. Steps 9-27 will say Create a Redrum and make a 32 step pattern using a Clap, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and Percussion.
  29. Now let's add a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop.
  30. Go to the Create menu and Create a Dr. Rex Loop Player.
  31. We need to load a loop, so click on the folder in the upper left hand corner of the loop player.
  32. Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: Dr. Rex Percussion Loops: and select any of the folders: choose a loop.
  33. On The Dr. Rex, click "TO TRACK"
  34. Steps 29-33 will say Create a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop and put it TO Track
  35. Save your beat in your folder! Give it whatever name you want.

Music Loops

As of late, we've been making our beats using the Dr. Rex Loop Player. We've used Hip Hop Loops, Scratches, Guitars and Percussion. Today, we're going to use a new style of loops called Music Loops.
  1. Open Reason
  2. Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
  3. Create a Dr. Rex
  4. Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.
  5. To get to the Music loops... go to: Reason Factory Sound Bank: Music Loops: Variable Tempo: Downtempo Loops.
  6. Choose a loop and then click "TO TRACK"
  7. Now set your tempo to the same tempo as your loop.
  8. Create a Redrum.
  9. Change the Steps to 32.
  10. In Sound 1, load a clap and put it on boxes 5 and 13.
  11. Now move "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
  12. Put the clap on boxes 5 and 13
  13. Move "EDIT STEPS" back to 1-16
  14. In Sound 2, load a bass drum and put it on 1 and a few other boxes that go with your loop.

The Return of Dr. REX

Today we are going to review what we learned yesterday. We are also going to add another kind of loop, a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop!

  1. Open Reason
  2. CREATE a Mixer 14:2
  3. Set Tempo between 80-110
  4. Create Redrum
  5. In Sound 1 on the Redrum, load a Clap or Snare and put it on 5 and 13.
  6. In Sound 2 on the Redrum, load a Bass Drum and put it on 1, and a few other boxes (except 5 and 13).
  7. In Sound 3 on the Redrum, load a Hi Hat and put it on boxes that sound good.
  8. In Sound 4 on the Redrum, load a Percussion sound and put it anywhere.
  9. Now, we want to edit steps 17-32.
  10. Change the steps of the Redrum from 16 to 32.
  11. Move the Edit Steps from 1-16 to 17-32.
  12. Select Sound 1 and click on boxes 5 and 13
  13. Select Sound 2 and click on boxes 1 and a few other boxes.
  14. Select Sound 3 and click on the boxes that sound good.
  15. Select Sound 4 and click on any boxes!
  16. Now that you've finished making your pattern, it's time to Copy Pattern To Track.
  17. Right click on the Redrum and select Copy Pattern to Track.
  18. Click on the PATTERN button on the Redrum so that they don't play at the same time.
  19. Now we want to Create a Dr. Rex instrument loop.
  20. Go to the Create menu and Create a Dr. Rex Loop Player.
  21. We need to load a loop, so click on the folder in the upper left hand corner of the loop player.
  22. Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: Dr. Rex Instrument Loops: and select any of the folders: choose a loop.
  23. On The Dr. Rex, click "TO TRACK"
  24. Now, let's add a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop.
  25. Go to CREATE: Dr. Rex.
  26. Click on the Folder in the upper left hand corner of the Dr. Rex.
  27. Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank:Dr. Rex Percussion Loops: Choose any of the folders: choose any of the loops.
  28. Click "TO TRACK" on the Dr. Rex
  29. Save your beat in your folder as The Return of Dr. Rex

Dr. REX continued

Today we are going to continue practicing making 32 step beats and using the Dr. REX Loop player.
  1. Open Reason
  2. Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2. If you don't see it, create one.
  3. Set your Tempo to anywhere between 80-110.
  4. Create a Redrum. We are going to make a 32 Step Beat.
  5. In Sound 1 on the Redrum, pick any Clap OR Snare Drum and put it on 5 and 13.
  6. In Sound 2 on the Redrum, pick any Bass Drum and put it on 1, and a few other boxes (except 5 and 13).
  7. In Sound 3 on the Redrum, pick any Hi Hat and put it on boxes that sound good to you.
  8. In Sound 4 on the Redrum, load a Percussion sound and put it anywhere.
  9. Now, we want to edit steps 17-32.
  10. Change the steps of the Redrum from 16 to 32.
  11. Move the Edit Steps from 1-16 to 17-32.
  12. Repeat steps 5 through 8.
  13. Now that you've finished making your pattern, it's time to Copy Pattern To Track.
  14. Click on the Green part of the Redrum, then go to EDIT and click COPY PATTERN TO TRACK (or right click on the redrum and click copy pattern to track IF your computer will let you).
  15. Click on the small PATTERN button on the Redrum so that they don't play at the same time.
  16. Now we want to Create a Dr. Rex instrument loop.
  17. Go to the Create menu and Create a Dr. Rex Loop Player.
  18. We need to load a loop, so click on the folder in the upper left hand corner of the loop player.
  19. Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: Dr. Rex Instrument Loops: Various Hip Hop Loops:
  20. Pick any loop you want from this folder. No matter what your TEMPO is, Reason will make the loop match the tempo (time/speed) of your beat.
  21. On The Dr. Rex, click "TO TRACK"
  22. Save your beat in your folder as (your name) dr. rex2

Introduction to the Dr. REX Loop Player

Today we are going to introduce 2 new things. 1: 32 step redrum beats. 2: The Dr. Rex Loop Player!
  1. Open Reason

  4. For this exercise, let's make a 32 step beat!
  5. Create Redrum
  6. In Sound 1 on the Redrum, pick any Clap and put it on 5 and 13.
  7. In Sound 2 on the Redrum, pick any Bass Drum and put it on 1, and a few other boxes (except 5 and 13).
  8. In Sound 3 on the Redrum, pick any Hi Hat and put it on boxes that sound good to you.

  23. Now create a new Reason Document and make a new beat following the steps in this excercise and select your own Dr. Rex Instrument Loop.

Redrum Quiz

Welcome to the very first quiz of the class. For todays quiz, we're going to make a beat with 2 patterns and copy it to the track. If the instructions are difficult, look at the pictures. They should help you out. As we get better with making beats in the class, the quizzes may get harder. Lets start!
  1. Open Reason
  2. If you don't see it, CREATE:Mixer 14:2
  3. Set your Tempo to anything between 80 and 110 BPM
  4. Create a Redrum
  5. On the Redrum: click on the Folder on Sound 1
  6. Go To Xclusive Drums Sorted and Select 04_Claps. Pick any clap you want.
  7. After you have chosen a Clap put it on the usual boxes for claps.
  8. On the Redrum: click on the Folder on Sound 2
  9. Go to Xclusive Drums Sorted: 01_Bass Drums
  10. Pick any Bass Drum (BD) and put it on the usual boxes for bass drums.
  11. On the Redrum: click on the Folder on Sound 3
  12. Go to Xclusive Drums Sorted: 05_HiHats
  13. Pick any Hi Hat and put it on the usual boxes for a Hi Hat.
  14. SAVE YOUR BEAT as (your name) redrum quiz!
  15. Now make a new pattern on PATTERN 2
  16. Select Sound 1, put the clap on the usual boxes.
  17. Select Sound 2, put the bass drum on the usual boxes. Try to make it sound a little different from pattern 1.
  18. Select Sound 3, put the hi hat on the usual boxes.
  19. Now, select Pattern 1. Move the "R" on the sequencer to 5. Right Click on The Redrum and Copy Pattern To Track.
  20. Now, select Pattern 2. Move the "R" to 9 and the "L" to 5. Right Click on The Redrum and Copy Pattern to Track.
  21. Move the "L" back to 1.
  22. Click on the Pattern button on the Redrum
  23. Save your beat in your file as (Your Name) Redrum Quiz.
  24. When you are finished, let me or Vernell know and we'll check your work.

Busta Rhymes Touch It

Today we are going to remake a beat that Busta Rhymes used. We will be loading in our own sounds from the folders at the top of the Redrum, Making Two Patterns, and Copying Them To Track.

  1. Open Reason
  2. Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
  3. Set Tempo to 102 bpm
  4. Create Redrum
  5. In Sound 1 on the Redrum, load Clap (clp_beltram) and put it on 7 and 13.
  6. In Sound 2 on the Redrum, load Bass Drum (bd_boomer) and put it on 1, 4, 5, and 11.
  7. In Sound 3 on the Redrum, load Percussion Hi (sh_brat) and put it on boxes 7, 8, 9, 11, and 13.
  8. Now change your pattern to Pattern 2.
  9. In Sound 4 on the Redrum, load Snare (sd_optical) and put it on boxes 7 and 13.
  10. In Sound 5 on the Redrum, load Bass Drum (bd_brassic) and put it on boxes 1, 4, 5, and 11.
  11. Select Sound 3 on the Redrum and put it on boxes 7, 8, 9, 11, and 13.
  12. Now, select Pattern 1. Move the "R" on the sequencer to 5. Right Click on The Redrum and Copy Pattern To Track.
  13. Now, select Pattern 2. Move the "R" to 9 and the "L" to 5. Right Click on The Redrum and Copy Pattern to Track.
  14. Click on the Pattern button on the Redrum
  15. Save your beat as "Touch It"
